The editorial committee of Pacific World asserts that AI cannot adequately approximate the encounter between a human scholar and their sources (articles, books, inscriptions, communities, etc.). All scholarship produced in the journal must reflect original work, not the work of an AI helper. Further, we question the ethics of non-consent in training materials used in AI environments. We are committed to publishing original scholarship that reflects the intellectual work of human authors. In light of the recent and rapid development of AI-assisted writing, the journal has adopted the Pacific World Policy on the Use of AI.
Disclosure Requirement
Authors must disclose any use of AI in the preparation of their manuscript; this includes any writing anywhere in the manuscript itself, as well as any correspondence with the journal. This disclosure must be included in the email submitted with the manuscript. If AI tools were not used, authors should state this explicitly.
Permitted Uses
- Proofreading for typographical errors
- Grammar and spelling checks
Prohibited Uses
- Creation of text in any portion of the manuscript, abstract, or correspondence
- Construction or development of arguments
- Translation of any sources
- Analysis or interpretation of texts, inscriptions, art, or other evidence
- Generation of citations, direct quotes, or other cited materials
Consequences of Non-Disclosure
Submission of a manuscript in which AI use has not been disclosed, or in which AI is used in ways prohibited by the journal, will result in rejection of the manuscript. If such AI use is discovered after acceptance, the published work will be retracted.
